Best Practices for Law Firms Using AI

Responsible AI use is essential in legal practice. Follow these guidelines to ensure ethical, compliant, and effective AI integration in your firm.

Always verify legal citations

AI can generate plausible but incorrect citations. Verify every case reference, statute, and regulation against authoritative legal databases before relying on them.

Review AI-generated documents

Every AI output requires thorough human review. Treat AI drafts as first iterations that need professional legal judgement and refinement.

Maintain client confidentiality

Be cautious about the information you share with AI tools. Anonymise sensitive client data and follow your firm's data protection policies.

Follow professional conduct rules

Ensure AI usage complies with SRA regulations, professional conduct obligations, and your firm's technology policies.

Claude for Law Firms: a practical UK guide

What Anthropic's Claude does exceptionally well for legal work — long documents, careful drafting — where it needs supervision, the confidentiality rules that come first, and 25 ready-to-use prompts.

01  Introduction

The careful one in the room

Claude, built by Anthropic, has earned a particular reputation among professionals: careful, nuanced, and unusually good with long documents. For lawyers — whose raw material is long documents requiring careful, nuanced handling — that reputation is worth testing.

This guide assesses Claude honestly for UK legal work: its genuine strengths, its limits, the safety rules that apply to any public AI tool — and one fact worth declaring up front: SpineLegal's own Matter Assistant is built on Anthropic's Claude models, so our view of what Claude can do inside a legal workflow comes from building on it, not just prompting it.

02  The question that comes first

Can law firms use Claude safely?

Yes — with the same discipline any public AI tool demands. Anthropic does not train its models on business API data by default, and Claude's consumer products offer privacy controls — but a public chat interface is still a public chat interface, and your professional duties don't change with the vendor:

1. Never paste client-identifiable information into a public AI tool. Whatever the provider's policies, entering names, matter references or identifying case facts into a consumer chat tool risks breaching your confidentiality obligations. Anonymise first, always.

2. Verify everything — especially citations. Claude hallucinates less brashly than some rivals, but it can still produce plausible, wrong answers, including invented authorities. Qualified human review before anything is relied upon.

3. Distinguish consumer Claude from Claude-in-a-platform. Claude in a browser tab knows nothing about your matters. Claude operating inside a legal platform — grounded in matter data, inside the firm's environment, with no training on client data — is a different safety proposition entirely. That distinction is the subject of section 05.

03  Capabilities — honestly assessed

What Claude does well for lawyers — and where it needs supervision

STRONG — USE FREELY

Long documents

A very large context window means Claude can hold an entire contract, judgment or bundle extract in view at once — version comparisons and obligation extraction across long instruments are a genuine strength.

STRONG — USE FREELY

Careful drafting

Claude follows complex, multi-part drafting instructions well and holds a specified tone — useful for client letters where nuance matters.

STRONG — USE FREELY

Summarising with structure

Chronologies, correspondence summaries and judgment distillations with the structure you specify, reliably followed.

STRONG — USE FREELY

Balanced analysis

Asked to argue both sides or attack your own position, Claude steelmans well and flags its own uncertainty more readily than most.

WEAK — HANDLE WITH CARE

Legal research & citations

Better-mannered than some, but still capable of inventing authorities. Every citation is unverified until checked against a primary source.

WEAK — BY DESIGN

Knowing your matters

Consumer Claude has never seen your files. Context must be assembled and anonymised by hand — every single time.

04  Prompts that work

Three legal Claude prompts to try today

From our 25-prompt library — replace the [brackets] with anonymised detail and paste straight in.

Judgment distillation
Summarise this judgment for a busy practitioner: facts in three lines, issues, what the court decided on each, the ratio, and what it changes in practice for [practice area] lawyers. [paste judgment text or official citation]

Tip: always verify the citation and read the key paragraphs yourself — summaries of law are the highest-risk use of AI.

Version comparison
Compare these two versions of the same clause/document. List every change, classify each as cosmetic / clarifying / substantive, and explain the practical effect of the substantive ones. Version 1: [paste]. Version 2: [paste]

Tip: classify-then-explain beats a raw redline for partner review — and long-document comparison is where Claude shines.

Difficult news, well delivered
Draft an email to a client delivering unwelcome news: [anonymised situation]. Acknowledge the disappointment, explain what it means practically, set out the two realistic options with pros and cons, and end with a clear recommended next step.

Tip: the options-with-recommendation structure prevents the "so what do we do?" reply.

Ready-to-use prompts for ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Grok across five categories: drafting & documents, summarising & analysis, client communication, legal thinking, and practice operations. Each with placeholders and a tip from real practice use — plus the safety rules that keep them defensible.

05  Beyond the chatbox

We didn't just review Claude. We built on it.

Here is the claim no other page in this series can make: SpineLegal's Matter Assistant runs on Anthropic's Claude models — the same AI assessed above, but grounded where it matters.

Consumer Claude asks you to bring the context: paste, anonymise, re-explain. Inside SpineLegal, Claude-powered AI already has the context — the matter's documents, correspondence, deadlines and stage — inside your firm's own secure environment, inheriting each user's permissions, with client data never used to train models and nothing released without a fee earner's confirmation.

Claude-class AI, matter-aware — the drafting and summarising strengths above, applied to the matter's own file with no pasting

Confidential by architecture — documents stay in your firm's Microsoft environment; the AI operates inside it, and outputs are reviewed before release

The same careful character — copilot not autopilot — the human-in-control principle Anthropic builds for is the principle SpineLegal is designed around

"We're able to quickly search for trade mark application and registration numbers under our care and instantly access case information, staff notes, and upcoming deadlines. The daily deadline email notifications to the team are reliable and ensure everyone is aware of their priorities."

06  Frequently asked questions

Claude for law firms — FAQs

Can UK law firms use Claude?

Yes — with the standard discipline: client-identifiable information never goes into a public AI tool, and every output is verified by a qualified lawyer before anyone relies on it.

Is Claude safe for confidential client information?

Consumer chat tools are not the place for client-identifiable data, whatever the vendor. Anonymise everything — or use Claude-powered AI inside a legal platform where data stays in the firm's environment and is never used for training.

Is Claude better than ChatGPT for lawyers?

Claude is particularly strong with long documents, careful drafting and structured summarising; ChatGPT has broader plugin and ecosystem reach. For core legal text work, many practitioners prefer Claude's handling of length and nuance — test both on your own (anonymised) work.

Does SpineLegal use Claude?

Yes. SpineLegal's Matter Assistant is built on Anthropic's Claude models via the Anthropic API — grounded in each matter's file, operating inside the firm's environment, with client data never used to train models.

What are the best Claude prompts for lawyers?

Prompts that exploit its long-document strength: full-contract obligation extraction, version comparison, judgment distillation. Our free Legal AI Prompt Library contains 25, all of which work in Claude.
